Houston care guide

A Houston search does not settle the Texas rules.

Choose a visit format with a clear idea of who will assess you, what they will review and how follow-up will happen.

Assumption to set aside · A doctor’s office elsewhere decides which rules apply.

The patient’s location matters

Telehealth moves the visit out of a shared room and onto video, a phone call or a written exchange. The health professional you see may be called a clinician.

For a doctor elsewhere, treating you while you are in Houston counts as Texas medical practice. This rule was checked September 26, 2026.

Under the rule checked September 26, 2026, the doctor usually needs a full Texas medical licence. The exception is for a special out-of-state telemedicine licence held as of September 1, 2022. Ask the doctor to identify the licence they rely on.

Some exceptions cover a specialist elsewhere advising a Texas-licensed doctor about a patient from time to time. They do not give that specialist general permission to treat Texas patients online.

What Texas licence or specific exception covers my visit?

An online first visit can be real care

As of September 26, 2026, a first Texas visit may use live video if the clinician can give the level of care your problem would require in person.

Another option for a first visit is to send health records or images for the clinician to review. A video visit does not have to come first, and you need not both be online at once. This review must still meet the care requirements for your problem.

Those health records may include your medical history, earlier prescriptions or test results.

In this guide’s reading of Texas law checked September 26, 2026, a phone call alone does not meet the listed rules for a first visit with a new clinician.

A phone-only visit can still qualify if you are already that clinician’s patient, or if they are covering another clinician’s calls under an agreement.

A room visit leaves space for an examination

Think about what you want to discuss face to face. Ask whether the assessment needs an examination or tests, and where those would happen.

For an online service, ask how it would arrange an in-person assessment if one becomes part of the plan. Ask who receives the results.

A clinic category or an online format does not answer those questions for you. Ask the person who will assess you to explain the visit.

Consent and follow-up belong in the visit

For your health problem, Texas requires online care to match the level of an equivalent visit in person, under rules checked September 26, 2026.

The clinician must obtain informed consent before telehealth care, meaning your agreement after the care has been explained.

After a first online visit covered by these Texas rules, the clinician must explain what care you need next.

If you consent and have a primary care doctor, a treatment report must reach that doctor within 72 hours under those rules.
