A small word covers very different choices

Peptides are short chains built from the same small parts as proteins; insulin is a familiar example.

Ask what the product actually is: an approved finished medicine, a custom preparation or a drug with no approval. The word “peptide” alone cannot answer that.

FDA means the Food and Drug Administration, which reviews evidence about medicines. Each FDA approval covers a named product and use, under rules checked September 26, 2026. Calling a treatment “peptide therapy” does not mean FDA has approved it.

Ask which medicine you would receive

Semaglutide (Ozempic, Wegovy) is a medicine ingredient. At the September 26, 2026 check, its FDA-approved uses included blood sugar control for type 2 diabetes with Ozempic and long-term weight control with Wegovy. Tirzepatide (Mounjaro, Zepbound) is another medicine ingredient. At that check, its FDA-approved uses included treating type 2 diabetes with Mounjaro and long-term weight control with Zepbound.

Approval belongs to the particular product and its uses, rather than to every mix that contains the same ingredient.

With compounding, the pharmacy or doctor makes a custom preparation. It is different from handing over a drug maker’s finished product.

That custom preparation does not carry FDA approval under the September 26, 2026 rules. FDA has not assessed this preparation before patients receive it to check whether it works, is safe or meets quality standards.

Check who would treat you in Houston

For a Houston reader, the Texas Medical Board provides the public licence search for doctors and physician assistants.

The person assessing your health may be called a clinician. In Texas, a physician assistant works with doctor supervision; that rule was checked September 26, 2026.

Use the clinician’s full name when checking the record. Ask for the name of the pharmacy too, rather than stopping at the name on an advert.

Take a goal into the conversation

Write down what brought you here: a health concern, a treatment name, or a claim you want to understand. Put that in your own words.

Ask the person assessing you to connect the treatment to your concern. Leave room to discuss other options, including no medicine.

What makes this treatment a fit for my concern, and how would we judge whether it helps?
